Breath and the space it makes
CHAKRASHOLISTIC HEALTHNEW

You have been breathing all day and you have not noticed once.
That is not a failing. It is how it is built. But it does mean the single most available thing you have for changing your state is running unattended, and has been for years.
What most of us are actually doing
Watch yourself for a moment without changing anything.
For a great many people the breath is high, in the top of the chest, and short. The in breath is bigger than the out breath. The shoulders lift slightly. There is very little pause anywhere in the cycle.
That is a braced breath. It is exactly what you would do if something were about to happen, and the body cannot easily tell the difference between something about to happen and a full inbox.
The out breath is where the settling lives. Lengthen it and things change, reliably, within a minute or two. You do not have to take my word for it, you can test it on a bad afternoon.
Breathe in for four. Out for six. Six or eight rounds. That is the whole thing.
The centre that is not really about talking
The throat centre is the one people most consistently mistake. They assume it is about confidence in speaking, and so they assume it does not apply to them if they can hold a meeting.
It is broader than that. It is about whether what is inside you is permitted out at all.
Which shows up as the sentence you rewrote nine times and then deleted. The opinion you swallowed because it was not worth the disagreement. The thing you meant to say to someone and said a smaller, safer version of instead. The creative work you have not begun because you cannot yet defend it.
There is a physical companion to this that anyone who works with bodies will recognise. Jaw held. Neck tight. That swallowing feeling before you say something that matters.
Breath and voice run through the same passage. This is not a metaphor, it is anatomy. Which is why breath work loosens speech, and why crying and singing both do something a conversation cannot.
May is the throat month in the first year of Chakra Garden, and the four are cleavers, spearmint, cerato and aquamarine. Cerato is my favourite of the whole essence set, because it is for the person who already knows the answer and asks six other people anyway, hoping one of them will say it back. Almost everybody has been that person.

Stillness is not emptiness
The commonest thing people say when they try to be still is that they are bad at it, because their mind keeps going.
Your mind keeping going is not a failure of the practice. It is the practice. The noticing that you have wandered, and the coming back, is the entire exercise. If your attention stayed put there would be nothing to train.
I would also say, gently, that a lot of what passes for stillness is not still at all. Guided audio, a podcast, a playlist of ambient sound, an app measuring your consistency. All of it useful, and none of it silence. There is still an input and there is still someone talking.
Real stillness is quite uncomfortable at first, because the things you have been outrunning arrive within about ninety seconds. That is not the practice going wrong. That is what the running was for.
Frankincense has been used in this territory for thousands of years and it earns its reputation. It slows the breath and it makes a room feel like it has edges. It comes into the programme in November, with the third eye, in the quietest month of the year, when things finally stop asking anything of you.

What I built instead of a track
This is the reason Chakra Garden has a timer in it, and the reason it is only a timer.
There are two ways in. The first is called Just Breathe, and it is exactly that. No map, no plants, nowhere to be. You pick four, seven or twelve minutes, a circle on the screen expands and contracts, and you follow it or you close your eyes and ignore it. Nobody talks.
The second is a tending session, which is the same timer with the month's centre behind it. It tells you where to put your hand, at the base of the spine, or the belly, or the brow, depending on the centre, and it adjusts what it asks of you according to where the moon is. At the new moon it asks for an intention. At the full moon it asks you to let something go. That is the whole of the instruction.
The sound is a synthesised gong rather than a recording, and each centre has its own tone, so a heart session and a throat session do not sound the same. One at the start, a gentle one about fifteen seconds before the end so that the finish does not startle you, and a softer one to close.
What it does not have is a voice telling you what to notice, a soundtrack, or any record of how many days in a row you have managed. I left the streak out deliberately. A broken streak is the single most reliable way to make somebody stop doing something that was helping them.
Something to do this week
Four minutes. A timer, not a track.
Sit. Let the out breath be longer than the in breath. When you notice you have gone somewhere else, come back. You will do this many times and that is correct.
Four minutes, not twenty. Twenty is how people fail at this and quietly conclude they are not the sort of person who can. Four is short enough that you will actually do it again tomorrow, and doing it again tomorrow is the only thing here that matters.
Chakra Garden opens this autumn.
