Grow you garden in harmony with the moon

Grow, harvest and tend your garden in harmony with the moon. A perpetual interactive guide for 50 plants: 25 medicinal herbs and 25 common vegetables, with daily lunar guidance for every day of the year.

B O - T A N I C S

Sow at the right moment. Harvest at the peak. Grow with the rhythm of the earth.

There is a reason why experienced gardeners and traditional healers have always paid attention to the moon. The cycles of the lunar calendar govern more than the tides: they influence the movement of moisture through the soil, the vitality of seeds, and the potency of the plants we grow for food and medicine. This is not superstition. It is an ancient body of practical wisdom, refined over centuries by farmers and herbalists across every culture on earth, and formalised in the twentieth century through the biodynamic growing movement pioneered by Rudolf Steiner and Maria Thun.

The Bo-tanics Biodynamic Moon Garden Calendar brings that wisdom into your pocket. Whether you are growing tomatoes and carrots on an allotment, tending a kitchen herb garden, or foraging the hedgerow for medicinal plants, this calendar gives you a daily framework for working with natural rhythms rather than against them.

What is biodynamic planting?

Biodynamic growing is built on the observation that the moon moves through the twelve zodiac signs on a regular cycle, spending approximately two to three days in each sign. As it does, it influences which part of the plant is most energetically active.

The four biodynamic day types are –

Root Days

When the moon is in Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn. Best for sowing, tending and harvesting root vegetables and root herbs.

🥕

🍃

Flower Days

When the moon is in Gemini, Libra or Aquarius. Best for flowering plants, cut flowers and herbs harvested at the flower.

🌸

🌾

Fruit + Seed Days

When the moon is in Aries, Leo or Sagittarius. Best for fruiting crops, seed saving and harvesting for flavour.

Leaf Days

When the moon is in Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces. Best for leafy vegetables, salad crops, leaf herbs and watering.

Alongside the day type, the phase of the moon matters too. The waxing moon draws energy upward into leaves, stems and fruits, making it the best time for sowing and planting above-ground crops. The waning moon draws energy downward into roots, making it ideal for root crops, transplanting and soil work.

Every date. Every task. Every herb.

A note on the tradition behind this calendar

The biodynamic growing calendar is rooted in the work of Austrian philosopher and scientist Rudolf Steiner, who first articulated the principles of biodynamic agriculture in 1924, and was developed into practical planting guidance by German researcher Maria Thun, who spent decades observing and documenting the relationship between moon cycles and plant growth. Their work built on millennia of traditional knowledge: from the Roman agricultural writers who advised sowing by the moon, to indigenous traditions such as the Maori Maramataka, which mapped planting and harvesting across the full lunar year. This calendar draws from that long lineage and brings it into a form that works for the modern home grower.
